The Day of 19th January 2019

In the past few months, I have been teaching over 15 underprivileged students from grades 1 to 9 at an after-school tuition centre. I have been helping them with their current NCERT syllabus, and teaching them several core concepts along the way.

My main focus of teaching at this centre, is to understand how much the children know, and help them enhance their knowledge.

Starting today, 19th January 2019, I will be documenting my tuitions and the knowledge and insights I have gathered after teaching these children.

Jan 19th 2019

Today, I taught 6 students from grades 2 to 6.

Jashwant – grade 6:  One of the concepts he was learning at school was  ‘Ratio and Proportion’. He was trying to solve exercises that were given for home work, but wasn’t able to do so. But once I explained to him how you can find the ratio between 2 numbers, he was able to solve the subsequent problems with ease.

Sai Babitha and Lavanya – grade 2: They were having difficulty in adding and subtracting money, which was given to them as homework. Once I explained the process of adding and subtracting numbers, they began to solve problems with more ease. However they still have some difficulty in adding some of the larger numbers.

Sai Daya – grade 5: He was able to understand how to round small numbers, but became confused when he was asked to round very large numbers. When I reinforced the concept of rounding numbers, he was able to solve the questions easily.

Diya – grade 3: She was learning how to check if a number is even or odd by dividing it by 2. However, she didn’t understand proper division, and was hence unable to answer the question properly. Once I taught her the key principle of division, and how to divide 2 numbers, she began to make fewer mistakes.
